My son is 12 years old and has been singing the National Anthem for a few years now. He has a wonderful voice and has been told that he has perfect pitch. He has been given the opportunity to sing at various functions in our community and school. How we did it was to ASK? It amazed me how individuals who ran the events never even thought about having children sing. The school has allowed him to sing it at basketball and football games. He has been permitted and asked to sing it at non-school affliated football games, and baseball games. It is really my husband who brings up the fact the my son can sing to most anyone who will listen and always volunteers him to sing at any function. What this has resulted in is that it has opened up opportunities for other kids to sing also. The school is now aware and has given others kids the chance. The community is now more aware and has given others an opportunity. It starts with one person taking the first step to make someone aware that the anthem can be sung and not played by tape or CD. It does wonders for all the kids that take part. I figure the worst anyone can say when asked is no. That just makes you go to someone else, eventually you'll get a yes.
